Everyone seems like they've been doing this questionaire lately, so I went to go track it down and do it as well. I don't know if my answers will be all that interesting, but at the very least, you'll have these. Anyways, if you're interested in the questionaire, it's by MOUSEcky and it can be found here.

This definitely took a while, especially to format. Awkward lol.

1. Please introduce yourself.
Hi I'm Vi or Water, whichever works.
2. How long have you been making websites?
I started around the time of turning 13. That was back in 2003.
3. And what got you into the hobby?
I used to browse around webgraphics sites (Not the typical sozai, but rather forum & LJ icons) back in the day a lot. I eventually really wanted to not only make my own webgraphics, but my own layouts, so I started tinkering around.
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
Personal sites. I like seeing things like media logs, personal collections, and artist portfolios.
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
This website was originally held together by duct tape. So, 100% designed as I went along.
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
Honestly, my biggest inspirations are all old sites that I don't think are online anymore, or just straight up have disappeared. There was a specific sozai & layout one that was in Japanese that I remembered using a lot of stuff from, that got me into developing, but I forgot their name because it's been such a long time. Another one is Aethereality (Archive). Aethereality was definitely one of the first sites that got me into making graphics, and I wouldn't have started making sites way back when I did if it wasn't for them. Itinerae & similar sites visually were a big inspiration for my current layout. And overall when it comes to theme, NGO comes to mind. My entire theme's colors are loosely based on Kangel. Whenever I make the next layout, I will probably switch back to her on my header.
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
Having somewhere to paste a lot of pictures of That One Yugioh Guy.
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
Mobile responsiveness, thus the lack of it on this site. I told myself to do better though, so I'll try again. Hopefully I can wrap my head around it this time.
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
I like the cohesiveness of having 1 layout. Thus, the only page that currently differs is my miniblog, which is where I put all my personal topics. At this point, I should just rename it to "blog"...
10. How confident are you with CSS?
Uh, mostly, but I'm not 100%. I'm very confident in what was common back around 2008-2012 when it came to design, but not so much when you start factoring updates for mobile viewing.
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
Enough to know that this is probably not how you use it.
12. What is your favourite HTML element?
To be honest, <div>?
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
If I'm using Photoshop for the main design, I determine how wide I want the design to be, and then I make my header. If I'm not using Photoshop, I set up a CSS file and start making a bunch of boxes with simple borders until I like the way everything fits together.
14. Do you know JavaScript?
Only enough to do very basic things.
15. How about PHP?
Truth be told, I'm better with PHP than Javascript, because back then people used PHP for everything. But the grasp of such is still very basic. Still, the odds of me getting PHP to do what I want in comparison to Javascript is a bit higher.
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
Light blue & White.
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
Content. Designs are cool and all, but I'm too much of a yapper.
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
No. Also no. I may be a supporter, but it's moreso for the space than the customization of the URL.
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
It's a lot more fun to see those. There's a lot of things that tend to fall under that umbrella, ranging from 90s to early 2010s and it's always so fun to see them all. I like them a lot better than the corporate feeling modern sites have.
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
I'll admit that I'm a bit of a lazy webmaster and I haven't checked validation on a fair share of a lot of my pages lately. But for the most part, most of it has been validated by the W3C's 5.0 validator. The only thing I struggle with is getting embedded media centered. I should probably make some sort of flexbox for that.
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
I enjoy seeing them.
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
So, I don't mind them. Most sites have button walls in some way. Sometimes it's a wall of links, other times it's just a collection of buttons. And both are fine. I'm just not crazy when sites only have that type of content without it being said that it's the focus of their site. Sometimes, I just wanna read about people's experience rather than see a bunch of images but no written content. Stuff like this is why I stopped distributing graphics other than my own, truth be told. I wasn't enjoying feeling like it was the focus of my site.
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
Probably the same, outside of design.
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
Nah, not really.
25. What text editor do you use?
Notepad ++
26. Why do you use that one?
When I started using Notepad++ it's because regular notepad was only white with black text and no real development tools. I think these days there's a bit more (at least a dark theme), but I'm not sure.
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
Pretty much all of my images & other files are hosted on this web server. I have a few things on Catbox, but it's very minimal. I only hotlinked buttons from people who gave the option, but I've been meaning on backing them up. I need to do a rehaul on my links page anyways.
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
Mixed feelings. On one hand, I think a fair share of it is kind of dumb when it comes to team mentality & stuff like that. But I also think there's some validity to it from a critique hosts and choose your host based on that. I think both sites, from what I've read as I've not used Nekoweb, tend to have a lot of creative people, unique works, and generally good plans & stuff. But for the most part I'm fine with being on Neo, even if I don't agree with some of Neo's takes on certain topics. But I also hear Neko has some downsides to it's community like infighting, bullying, & generally a lot of minors hang out there. So it's definitely not for me.
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
675 MB
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
Absolutely. I beg everyone that reads this: keep a copy of your site in your locals, and also keep a 2nd copy backup on another drive or something.
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
I don't care that much, as long as I'm able to read things and navigate.
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
Absolutely. Also it's on purpose, because the entire theme of this site is to be blue.
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
I figured I'd probably quit when I get bored again. But I like to yap. But it's inevitable to have downtimes with your site when you don't do stuff. However, I really want to finish all my reviews before I quit, so I think for the next 2 years or so, I'll probably have content for you all.
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
Yeah. I've met plenty of nice people on Neocities, as well as just knowing other friends before I joined Neo who make stuff.
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
I don't want anyone I don't talk to online to read my site because I'm still closeted lol. I'm pretty openly out online though.
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
I want to say I average somewhere around 2 updates a week?
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
I haven't changed it in a year. But I think I want to make a new one.
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
Hobby.
39. Do you do web design professionally?
A long time ago, I did some paid web work. I didn't like the idea of having my hobbies as a job though. Made me not want to work on my hobby stuff. So I quit for a while. I also hate very corporate feeling designs. Bleh.
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
Never again. As for work, ever since our family's last business went down, I haven't worked in a bit. But for the most part, I used to do clerical work, as well as monitoring livestock.
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
Not as much.
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
Unless chat clients count as social media, I still really only have my account for the stupid birdsite due to the fact that nobody really actually migrated to bsky & that unfortunately tends to be where most people that commission me are from. I also have bsky & tumblr, but I also rarely use them. For the most part I check for a very limited time during the week, and will only scroll if someone I know strikes up a convo or I'm getting some form of payment. I really wish all the people who said they were going to bsky actually did it but it only stuck for like a week with most. And I really can't just give it up because I don't have a technical job right now and my audience is pretty small as is when it comes to commissions. If they cut more funding to state funded medical services and I can't find work for longer, I'm going to be relying 100% on commissions, because I can really only cover my rent & necessities right now (because medical is covered). Sorry, that's a bit of a rant, but despite having wanted to nuke my birdsite account ages ago (even before I joined neocities), it's really impossible for me to give up that lifeline due to my prescriptions, one which I can't live without... Basically, that stupid site is a necessary evil I have to keep in my life if I want to be alive.
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
I'm an MMO player, I need to use them--namely Discord. I am not typing shit mid pull.
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
Yes. Yume 2kki BGMs usually.
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
I have 1 primarily, and a WIP shrine that I keep putting off...
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
The main topic of my site overall would probably be otaku media. Because while you could count an art portfolio, web graphics, premades, figure reviews, TCG, and media reviews all as separate topics, the thing that connects them all is that they're pretty much all rooted in anime & gaming culture, which is just easier to simplify as "otaku."
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
I think I'm pretty honest about who I am. If I wasn't, you wouldn't see me get annoyed at some of the things I do. Plus most of my miniblog is just me venting, I feel. Can't get any more real than an unhinged rant about FF14 opinions.
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
I've met quite a few nice people so far. I dunno if I'd say we're close, but I'm not against talking to people more.
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
I'm not crazy about HTML constantly wanting style commands and the fact that some simpler tags, like the center tag for example, being done away with.
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
Well, I've seen divs used for things that already have existing tags, but I can't say I was never guilty of doing that myself.
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
At some point, everyone should have their CSS minimized & their code cleaned a little.
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
My layout has semantic HTML to the point you could navigate it without a mouse, but I'm sure if someone went through and really picked at it, there is areas that could be improved upon. I am no master of semantic HTML or anything like that.
53. Do you consider different browsers?
I tend to test my site across 4 different browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera. I could probably look into Safari testing as well. I don't know any other web browser that's big enough to warrant testing on though, aside from that one. I could also test in Skyleap for the memes.
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
I play Granblue Fantasy, so unfortunately I use Chromium browsers out of habit from playing it. I have no alliance to any broswer though, nor a good reason to recommend any particular one. In my mind, almost all of the mainstream ones suck.
55. And what OS are you on?
Windows 11.
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
Hate it! I've been meaning to change over to a Linux set up, I'm just lazy and haven't done it yet, because there's simply not enough time in the day and I also didn't wanna get caught having any sort of issue with a program I needed for raiding.
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
No, but that's the next thing on the table.
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
I loathe it. I'm listening to my own music most times.
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
I enjoy seeing the return of webrings. I'm in quite a few.
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
I've got one thats a work in progress. Also, I just like to see people's take on media or a character, and their own personal stuff related to all that, like photos of their collection, or their fanart, or their fanfiction.
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
I think my shrine looks unique in the matter of the type of graphics it uses, but for the most part the layouts overall look pretty cliche. It doesn't bother me though. If other people want these kinds of layouts, its for a reason I figure: It's just a popular type of configuration. A while back, a lot of personal fan sites used to look like this.
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
One that looks the way mine does and works the way I want it to on mobile LMAO.
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
I'm an artist, but the only asset on my site that I made in particular was the plaid heading. I think my next layout, I will draw the header image.
64. What are your favourite resource sites?
Unironically, a lot of the graphics I used to get were from tumblr and were just sitting on a harddrive, so I don't really have a lot of favorite resource sites in that sense, because there was no one particular blog. Same for when I used places like LJ & DA for resources. I suppose if I were to pick a code website that's a favorite, it'd just be W3Schools. If I gotta name someone in particular that isn't just a big userbase, Loveberry & Salvaged come to mind
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
Using the center tag LOL.
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
Back up your files, and test your stuff locally instead of using the on site text editor. If you use a text editor and save anything as NAMEHERE.HTML, you can just click on the file, and it will open in your browser. It is so much better to make adjustments than to do it live through Neocities.
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
Most of my styling is in CSS, but some specific things are hard coded.
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
Framesets are pretty old. I haven't seen too many lately, because most people tend to use iframes. But even iframes tend to be not reccomended due to the fact that they can be seen as insecure. Or at least, I remember there was a huge period of people being like "iframe layouts are bad don't use them." But it was also a while back. But considering with the oldweb revival you see a lot of older development techniques coming back, it's not surprising that even framesets would come back.
69. How about table-based layouts?
Oh man, that's another thing I also don't see too often. I remember for a while, some anime layout websites would do table layouts as a formality for having that category, but they'd do divs arranged in the "table" structure as people called it. But yeah, another thing that just makes me feel old.
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
Yeah, these don't bother me at all. I mean, this layout you're looking at is one of them.
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
The CSS.
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
The sound of pure black text on a pure white background makes my eyes hurt.
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
Yeah, because I enjoy messing around with code.
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
I'm probably somewhere in the middle, if not a straight up beginner when it comes to some of the updates to both CSS & HTML. Then again, years of language updates to something you were self taught on in middleschool will do that. Basically, I have the fundamental understanding, but I could probably stand to run through some sort of review of it all again. Like, it's amazing what you'll retain over the years, but I'm never confident in myself enough to say "oh yeah I'm far ahead because of all that time." Like, no, there's no way. Look at my code, it's a mess.
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
Yes, absolutely.
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
I downloaded premades and messed around. When I started to learn about the visual part of making sites, I just used Photoshop's slice tool and would edit what I wanted to stick in through brute forcing and looking at more premades. When I came back, I looked at some of my old layouts and slowly started building off of that. This layout is the first one I made that wasn't made solely as image assets cut up with the slice tool. I mostly made it to challenge myself, and I'm glad I did, instead of clinging onto old design practices.
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
Pretty sure.
78. Thoughts on floating elements?
Good.
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
I try to use em these days for the most part, but admittedly I use all 3. Depends on what I want an element to do.
80. Do you have a favourite font?
MS Gothic.
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
No. For a variety of reasons from wanting full control over certain elements of the site, feeling pressured to keep up if the other user is more active with the project than I am, or not putting in the same level of effort as me, or if we had conflicting ideas on how a project should go. I feel like the only time I'd be okay with sharing if it was something like a forum, but even then, I don't want to administrate other people. All of it sounds like a headache lol.
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
I end up poking around here and there on Neocities, but sometimes I slack when it comes to checking out new people.
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
Quite a bit. Also, I'm fine with it. IDK how to respond to that honestly because I'm like "wow cool the idea of someone liking my site enough to save stuff on it makes me happy" but also I'm just like embarassed because I can't handle taking complements most times. Even when I get positive messages in my guest book, I feel so awkward. Not in a bad way though, I enjoy it, but I suppose I have that same issue Shinji Ikari has: I say sorry for anything and everything, and I'm not used to getting praise, but I do want it, but when I get it I'm not really sure how to handle it past going "Wow, I like this." Is that an overbearing response to this question? Probably. I'm just saying I'm awkward overall though.
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
Normally I'd say my figure reviews, but I think they could be better when it comes to the photographs. I suppose if not for that I want them to come to my site and be like "wow, this person is so right, Seto Kaiba is so cool. I love Yugioh I'm going to make a Yugioh website!" but also like that's a rather grand delusion and me putting out propaganda to get people to make Yugioh sites. (This is a joke. But also you should read Yugioh)
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
Yes. I usually build my own computers. I wouldn't say I collect technology that much though, outside of media discs.
86. How often and for how long are you online?
Hahahahaha...
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
Figure collectors.
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
While proofreading, I realized I mixed XHTML up with XML. Wasn't XHTML what they did for a while between 4 & 5? It really didn't make that much of a difference. I remember seeing people talk like it was going to be the new biggest thing, and then it just flopped. Lol.
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
No! Too dumb! I'd love to learn at some point but I don't think I'll ever get around to it. I've just never had the drive.
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
Unless you count the use of Photoshop's slice tool as an SSG, I don't really tend to use them. I remember our school computers used to have Dreamweaver, but I don't think that's an SSG either. So I suppose no, I haven't used one. I'm interested in reading more into it and seeing what you can do with it, before really ruling it out. I get the feeling it might be too corporate for my tastes though.
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
Yeah because it's cool and blue.
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
Unfortunately MyFigureCollection. There are a few others, but I bring up MFC because I've been there for years. A lot of the other forums I used to frequent have shut down. A lot of them were focused on gaming communities or roleplay. The biggest forum I was on pre MFC was Rooster Teeth's website, followed by MyAnimeList. However RT's forum was deleted quite a bit ago, and RT themselves are no more. MAL still exists, but most of those people are obnoxious and I don't care to be there any longer, so I deleted. Anything else I use feels a bit more obscure.
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
I write all my content directly into an editor. It's why I don't have autocorrect on my ass about really redundant lines or awful typoes. You can tell when I get distracted mid thought, when I stop writing in the middle of an article, or when I just don't know how to word things. There's plenty of times where my wording sounds stiff, a ton of grammatical mistakes, awkward phrasing, and most of all, giant run on sentences. Especially when I start in on a topic and I don't edit as I think, and I just keep on going. I had someone once tell me that the way I write sometimes sounds robotic or even like AI and my response to that is just: No I'm just stupid and I lose concentration a lot, and then I try to overcorrect in longer documents and you can tell. Truth be told, I need some sort of proofreader, but I couldn't be assed to hand my files to anyone to be proofread. That sounds cumbersome and burdening for others, and most of the people I would trust with my projects tend to be busy anyways, so I don't really want to bother them lol. Awkward maybe. I could probably plug my stuff into google docs, but on the off chance that I do end up doing that, they also look overcorrected and awkward. So they both end up feeling, I don't know, weird. I should just take a writing class at this point... After all, it's been way too long since I've been in school. Also, I tend to get told that I type too much like I talk.
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
I have no idea.
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
Yeah, I'm embarassed about all my old forum webgraphics lol. But people wanted to see them, so I put them up. I suppose if people want to see my old forum tags/signatures, I'll put them up as well. I probably won't put them all up because some are just downright ugly, but I had fun making a lot of them. Also, I've deleted some of my old site stuff, but not out of shame, but rather due to losing it or being harassed tbh. Actually, I'mma just be real here, I get embarassed of pretty much everything because of the fact I was bullied a lot for liking things sincerely so I've had my brain poisoned with irony and I feel bad for putting my everything into my work because I'm always afraid someone's going to come up to me and be like "why is someone as old as you running a site where you talk about anime that's weebish" and I'm just there like sweating because I don't know but I do know I like Yugioh and cute girls and funny monster friends.
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
I will probably leave it as an archive minus maybe my miniblog. That's probably getting hidden via password or just deleted. I don't really have anything bad on there, I know, but I always fear someone will see whawt I say and try to take it wildly out of context or something when most of it ammounts to "I am frustrated by this occurence, I will get it off my chest, and I will attempt to make peace with it."
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
I think I yap too much about my inner thoughts.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
IDK if my besties want me sharing their websites.
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
I try to, but I've been a bit lazy with some of my minecraft & scribbles lately. Oops. Another thing to go on the To Do list. If I didn't compress at all though, the size of my site would be well over like, 2gb probably.
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
Like I should get back to work on my site, and that I should figure out how to format this in my CSS. I also have a bit of a headache, but I was also watching something while typing all of this, so I'm pretty sure that's why.

back?
