ARTFX J 1/7 Seto Kaiba by Kotobukiya
Originally I wanted to put this out around the time of Kaiba's birthday, but we're doing it around 5 days later because I got a bit overwhelmed and I had crammed in a ton of work before that. Either way, I've been meaning to get around to doing this one. I originally planned to do it a while back, but I think I've talked about how I needed to retake several photos because of how dark they came out, on top of the shadows just being really drastic. Well, I don't think these photos are that much better, but I suppose it's going to tell me where I need to head next when it comes to learning how to photograph figures well. Maybe I'll aim to get a little point and shoot camera for Christmas this year and some sort of small light, so I don't have to keep moving the lamp in my room.
All that aside, I originally got this figure a while back, after my birthday last year. He cost around 90 USD and I grabbed him off of Bait's website. I think the shipping came out to around 15 dollars. No surprise on that though, his box is huge. Either way, let's continue on with this review.
Also, this figure isn't too hard to get a copy of. He's been released a total of 5 times over the years, so I'm sure that getting one isn't too bad. I don't know if they'll continue to reprint him or any of the older figures, considering they're beginning to release an entirely new Yugioh line by Kotobukiya based off new illustrations and 2 of the 4 are already up for sale and come out sometime during Q2 of 2026.
Honestly, I have 2 decorated photos of this picture. I contemplated putting both of them up, but the other one was not only super dark due to using natural lighting as the sun went down, but the decorations looked a bit lackluster. Sometimes I'm super glad that I just have this random vase of fake flowers that I've had in my room for quite some years, because if it weren't for that, I don't think I'd have anything taller than this figure that was suitable for pictures. Thank you impulse buy from the dollar tree on a random Tuesday like 8 years ago, you really had my back.
Moving on, let's take a look at the box. So, I meant to have a picture of the top of the box, but because the picture came out incredibly weird and just kinda showed everything off at the side, I deleted it. I can tell you there's a huge window at the tom with some pretty retro Kaiba art from the early 2000s. Like all the other box pictures I need to take at a later moment, I'll get to it at some point. However for now, you get these photos. Lots of big windows and in various shapes. I really like the Blue Eyes wing that they put for one window. Super cute. Kinda sad the other window is just a circle. I get that it's because the start of the Burst Stream effects, but it's still a bit plain in comparison to some of the other boxes. Also this box is huge as I stated. These will probably get retaken at some point in the future, but knowing me, so will 90% of the photos in the review section.
My box absolutely has a few minor scrapes on it. That's not manufacturer or even distributor error, but my own error because of the fact that this box is so huge, so I have to stack it closer to the bottom of my closet shelf, and thus every time I move it, a little bit of scraping happens. It doesn't really bother me personally, a box is a box, and it's meant to keep the figure safe.
Also, for anyone wondering, yes that's a glittery background insert. And that makes this box pretty awesome. They really did have fun with these boxes.
Here's the blister. There's a lot of plastic, and even more plastic I forgot to slip on around the Duel Disk (those come in little bags usually.) Anyways, because I repackaged this guy for the sake of these pictures, I don't remember how the plastic sheets around him were wrapped, I just took a guess at it, and I rolled with that. So if you're repackaging him to keep him safe for a move, I suppose this is one of many ways you can put the plastic, assuming you're the type to save all that. I hate going "better in my closet than in a landfill," but I suppose that's the truth.
Here's Kaiba from every angle. And if you read my last review, you know exactly what I'm going to start complaining about...
Once again, we have another situation of this figure looking spectacular, but the display from multiple angles is just wonky. Now, I won't lie. MOst of the time I do these 360 views it's not to point out how the figure looks bad when you put it on display at other angles, but rather to see the paint and sculpt from various angles to reassure you that it looks good on that end. So when I say "oh the figure looks good from every angle," I don't mean in the display way. Because going to display him, it's so very clear that you have 2 shots that don't look incredibly weird. And those are notably the 2nd and 6th shots of the figure. Other than that, the sense of motion with the coat is captured very clearly, it has a very fluid look to it. It makes him look very cool. But at the same time it's so jarring to see at other angles. And also, it's very big. Because of course it is, this is Kaiba. When you collect Kaiba figures, you ask yourself how much you like having space on your shelf and then you agree "It doesn't matter, because shelving is for displaying more things of Seto Kaiba," and then you cry yourself to sleep because you have no space.
Onto the details.
So, the details on this figure are pretty nice. There's quite a few glaring production flaws that I didn't really get the best pictures of, but they're there. For example, on the inner lining of his coat, closer to his belt buckle, there's a huge error when it came to painting in the magenta. It's just... messed up I suppose. It's unfortunate, but it's really not too noticeable. There's also a few errors on the back of his coat. One of them is visible, but most of them aren't. It's just something you notice because of the texture, so I assume it's dust or something getting trapped under the paint. I'm kinda whatever about it, because it's not like I tend to touch his coat unless I'm cleaning it, and that's about the only time I really remember this. There's also a minor error on his shirt. Just paint really. Only stands out because it's white on black. Unfortunate.
Also despite retaking these photos they still look so dark because of the way his hair casts shadow on his face. It really makes it distracting when trying to look at the face up close. But hey, I suppose the hair having a bit of a drastic shadow is pretty accurate. I guess that's to say, "Wow Koto, you did a good job with the sculpt, even moreso than with the shading, so now natural shadows act as they should." Neat, I suppose.
Other than that, he has one interchangeable part, and it's the spare arm without the Duel Disk. Like yeah, you could display him without it, I suppose. But like most figures in this series, it's like a formality. It's there to add to your collection of spare boy arms. Why? Not sure. But these figures are very much meant to be displayed with the Duel Disk. They just look a bit naked without them.
The rest of the details check out. Everythings there and fairly detailed, but there's definitely a weird sculpting error on the belt, where it looks like theres 2 sort of weird imprinted gashes or something? Not really sure why. It's not too noticeable, I will say. Mostly because until I took these photos, I didn't even really notice it. Disappointed in the quality checking with this figure, but I've decided to forgive Kotobukiya because I like Kaiba.
Base is pretty simple. Most of the figures in this line tend to have the broken concrete that conveniently only surrounds their feet type of bases. Ideal if you want to fit other things on a shelf. The only issue I have with this particular one is that on this figure, it's a bit wobbly. I wonder if one of the screws is too tight. I suppose I'll check that later though.
For the most part, despite his flaws, I'm very happy with this figure. Was one of the first scales I bought after returning to collecting. Was even more noteworthy because it was the first scale I sought out that wasn't something I had to sell or cancel. And I had gotten him for my birthday as well. So I suppose he's a bit special to me, for that reason.
The Positives
- Gorgeous figure. Paint & sculpt look great.
- If you like figures with a bit of a "retro" aesthetic, he's very appealing. A bit on the Y2K side as well as being late 90s/early 00s "retro"/"nostalgia"
- 1/7th scale, but pretty big despite being 1/7th.
- Fairly affordable. Especially if you happen to buy him within the States (it's actually cheaper than importing him, especially right now.)
- Not particularly hard to find on the aftermarket.
The Negatives
- Huge shelf hog. The coat being as flared out as it is means he's going to take a lot of space.
- If you keep your collection & shelves on the smaller side, he might be a tough squeeze onto a shelf.
- Unfortunately, he has quite a bit of errors. Hopefully other people don't have this issue with him.
- Really only looks good from 1 angle.
Overall, banger figure. Worth the buy. Would I recommend him? I think it depends on what you feel towards the upcoming Kotobukiya Kaiba. But if it weren't for that figure coming out, I'd say he's worth getting. Would I pick this one over the other currently released Kotobukiya Kaiba? I think it depends. They both look good, but I think this one has the cooler pose. That one however has the added bonus of looking better at more than a singular angle. But we'll talk about that one at a later point.
Also, the original release of this figure came with the Kaiba Corporation Battle Ship as a bonus keychain. Would I ever seek it out? Probably not. I don't think I could handle having 2 of this figure in my collection. If someone sold it separately, I still... probably wouldn't. But that exists, and I figured I should note it somewhere in here.
