Amakuni & Hobby Japan 1/7 Takemi Tae
So, I kind of stalled all month on finishing this review. Either way, I'm finally getting around to it now, at the end of May, despite wanting to be done with it at the beginning. I suppose that's life though. Either way, this is Amakuni's Takemi Tae. Once again, this isn't my figure, she belongs to a friend. I did already ship her back to him though, and she's safely in his hands. However, huge thank you to him for allowing me to crack her open and review her. After all, stuff like this is always pretty fun.
She ended up costing around 22800 yen and shipped for 3600 yen via Registered Small Packet off of Amiami. That puts her around 158 USD back when she was bought I believe. I dunno, conversions have kinda gone up so it's hard to remember exacts. I believe Amiami still has her for this price. So if you want her and don't mind paying around 180 total, not a bad idea.
Anyways, with that out of the way, here's a picture of her. Not going to lie, she's pretty nice. I wouldn't say she's my favorite figure when it comes to Persona 5 though. Not that I'm huge on Persona 5 figures. But I do have a few grievances with her which I don't think show up very well in photos? But I don't think she's super bad either. It's just personal opinion, that's all.
So, onto the box. Well, as you can see here, there's no window. Yeah, I won't lie, I'm with most people who feel like a window is ideal. Even if it's not an attractive look inside the box, I always want to be able to see the figure inside of the box without needing to have it opened. But the box itself isn't bad. The design is eye catching, as most P5 figures tend to be. It has the usual visual flair, along with the pictures of her all on the back. And it generally does its job so I guess not too much complaints. But, I'm pretty sure she has a fair share of bootlegs, and the lack of a window always makes it easier for people to get away with bootlegging a figure.
Here's a picture of her inside her blister. She has plenty of plastic sheets to protect from paint transfer, and she feels pretty secure in here. No damage whatsoever. Taped to the bottom of the blister was her instructions. However, I cut them off and had placed them on top. The instructions really only go over how to put her coat on, which is not too difficult.
A 360 view of Takemi. For these, I decided to put her coat on rather than have her coatless. After all, I feel the coat is the signature look, so it feels best to concentrate on that. She looks pretty good from most angles. I love the details on her shoes. They look really good. I wish I could wear shoes like that without falling over lol.
Anyways, it's time to move on to the details.
The patient chart slots into her hand pretty easily. It doesn't always stay the most secure and will fall out if the surface she's standing on is hit hard enough. It's not super ready to fall out at any moment, but it's not stuck in there either. I wish the writing on it was similar to her nametag, which seems more realistic. But I suppose this also works considering how medical documents tend to look as well. Very cold and formal.
The coat itself has pretty much no shading. I suppose it's not really needed as natural shadows cast onto it and do the work. But I can't help but feel at times that it looks a little bit like a white blob in some parts. The hair has kind of a similar issue, but not with the shading and rather with the sculpt. It feels very rounded, which isn't normal for hair, I feel. It also doesn't help that the hair doesn't have the best shading either.
Moving on, here's some pictures without the coat. You can see the details on the belt easier this way, and it really pops. Honestly, all her accessories look really cute and super good. I'm glad they paid attention to detail with that. Same for how they handled the nail polish.
Finally, here's a picture of her base. In her case, it's just her chair. It has a simple groove that helps her stay flush against the chair in a natural way. Much better than the noodle topper figures that just have a completely flat bottom so they can sit on things. As I've said in the past, I always like a really creative base, so her simply having a chair rather than a disc to stand on is much preferred.
Overall, this is a pretty nice figure. I don't know if I'd buy her for myself, but she's definitely not bad.
The Positives
- Attention to detail with shoes & accessories is super nice.
- Creative base, doesn't tend to wobble in it.
- Coat is easy to slip on and off with no paint transfer or breaks.
- Having both a coat and alternative arms to display her without the coat is always a good option.
The Negatives
- Her jacket doesn't have much in the way of shading, kind of looks like a blob of white in certain lighting.
- The sculpting on her hair is super rounded in some parts and looks awkward for certain pieces of hair.
- Hair also doesn't have the best shading.
- Doesn't have a window on her box, which can be offputting for some buyers on the aftermarket. At least no known bootlegs of her exist currently, but this could be an issue in the future.
I think if you're a huge fan of Persona 5 or just generally super into the aesthetic she has going, she might be pretty worth it. Outside of that, I dunno if I think she's worth Amakuni's initial price. It's better if you get a discount on her, if possible. But she's not bad either. I'd just say if anything, she's overpriced.
